The Spinanes had a particular acumen for deprived sanguine college rock that was as reclusive as their deprived and sanguine fanbase, although Imp Years proved the band was far more caustic than most people gave them credit for. Collecting the band's 1992 pre-Sub Pop 7" singles, this diminutive compilation crawls with abruptness and melancholy. "Messy Shitty" is appropriately named but not unsuccessful, and "Halloween Candy" and "Hawaiian Baby" are quiet, insistent numbers which underline the early talent of Rebecca Gates' voice and her perpetual career-long taste for acoustic passive-aggressiveness. Read More
